Dmytro was born in Mykolaiv city in 1967. He studied at the Grekov Odessa Art School in 1988. He has been exhibiting his works both in Ukraine and abroad since 1991. At a certain stage of his creative work, he rejected the professional education openly calling himself in publications a “half self-taught artist.” He is the member of New Naïve Art, the project researching the unprofessional art initiated by Ya Gallery Art Center in 2009. He lives and works in Mykolaiv to this day.
In his pictorial series of the last years, neo-naïve painter Dmytro Moldovanov plunges even deeper into the invented and illusory world inhabited by strange creatures unlike the early satiric and grotesque works with specific characters lost in the urban suburbs. The artist’s inclination to see the reality in a childish way is marked on the canvas by the choice of disproportion and solid-colored “flat” picture. The “childishness” is also underlined by sharp outlines of names the artist leaves on the canvass to hint at the painting’s meaning or emphasize a detail of the picture.
