Bozhena was born in 1983 in Vchoraishe village, Zhytomyr oblast, where she lives with her mother and father to this day. She graduated from school with honors. Bozhena was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia while studying at school. She was treated in the Zhytomyr oblast psychiatric clinic where art therapy (occupational therapy) proved to have a beneficial effect on her health condition.
Since 2001, embroidery has become Bozhena Chaharova’s main occupation. It changed from decorative at the early stages to expressive modern and original, with a lot of textual quotations later on. She treats art very seriously: “It takes me at least three months to create my standard embroidery by a specific sketch which cannot be changed, that is no improvisation is possible. Embroidery is the pixels of a ‘dialectical matrix.’”
Ya Gallery Art Center held the first personal exhibition of Chaharova’s works called Ukraine: Apogee of Surrealism at the end of 2018. And 2019 already saw a large-scale exhibition project Bozhe Na: Life and Work of Bozhena Chaharova in Zhytomyr which was curated by Pavlo Gudimov. The book about the artist entitled Bozhena Chaharova: Dialectical Matrix was printed by ARTBOOK and RODOVID publishing houses the same year.
